Rob Wagner / Hamid Drake / Nobu Ozaki s/t Valid Records CD $12 |
Rob Wagner is a saxophonist and clarinetist based in New Orleans who, like many musicians from the Crescent City, has an extensive musical background in a multitude of settings, including jazz, klezmer, R&B, funk, and more. For his fourth session as a leader, he teams up with his NOLA compatriot Nobu Ozaki and celebrated Chicago drummer Hamid Drake. They deliver a strong set, vibrant and sometimes reflective, with the balance of flow and freedom that is often heard on records with Drake at the drumkit. Recorded in New Orleans a couple months after Hurricane Katrina hit, there is also a bit of a defiant vibe, as evidenced on the title of the opening cut, "Desoparia (They handed out $12 billion cash in Iraq and couldn't give New Orleans drinking water)".
Rob Wagner: clarinet, tenor and soprano saxophones
Hamid Drake: drum kit and frame drum
Nobu Ozaki: bass
